The Full Height Turnstile: A Complete Barrier for Unattended, High-Security Perimeter Access

● 2026-09-28 ● - ● Leave me a message

Not every pedestrian entrance needs the same level of control. An office lobby can be managed with a speed gate or a flap turnstile, because the people inside are employees and visitors who are already screened at reception. A factory perimeter, a transit station, a construction site, or a secure compound is a different problem. There, the entrance has to stop the wrong people from getting through, and it has to do it without a guard watching every lane. That is the job of the full height turnstile.

Why a Full Height Turnstile Is Different from Other Gates

A swing gate, a flap gate, or a tripod turnstile leaves gaps that a determined person can exploit. Someone can climb over a low barrier, squeeze under a flap, or push through behind an authorized user. A full height turnstile removes those gaps entirely. The cabinet and the rotating cage extend from the floor to overhead height, forming a locked metal cylinder that a person cannot climb over, crawl under, or force open. The rotating arms move one step at a time, and after one person passes, the cage locks again until the next credential is presented.

This is why the product is chosen for sites where casual entry is not acceptable. It is not about looking secure. It is about making unauthorized physical passage impossible, not merely inconvenient.

The Core Advantages

At ZOJE, the anti-trailing function is the main reason buyers specify this gate. Because the cage rotates in fixed steps and locks between them, one credential equals one passage. A second person cannot follow through before the mechanism closes. On a conventional swing gate, the gap between two people walking through is a well-known security hole. On a full height turnstile, that hole does not exist, and the site can run unattended without a guard watching the lane.

The second advantage is durability.

ZOJE builds the housing from industrial-grade 304 stainless steel as standard, with 316 stainless steel available for coastal or heavily polluted sites. The gate is designed for indoor and outdoor use, which means it sits at a factory entrance exposed to wind, rain, and dust without shelter. A brushed stainless steel enclosure in this kind of environment keeps working for years, while painted or lower-grade equipment rusts and jams.

The third advantage is flexibility in layout.

A full height turnstile can be supplied as a single lane or as a dual-channel unit that combines two lanes in one cabinet. The dual-channel design saves space compared with two single gates installed side by side, and it simplifies the site layout where two directions of traffic need to share a single footprint. The gate can also be delivered fully welded or disassembled, which matters for shipping to remote locations where the installation team has to move the equipment through a narrow doorway.

Operation can be fully automatic or semi-automatic. The automatic version uses a brush, brushless, or servo motor for quieter, smoother cycling and a longer service life. The semi-automatic version uses a solenoid drive and is the standard configuration, which keeps the purchase price reasonable for sites that run steady but not heavy traffic.

Where This Gate Is Used

A full height turnstile shows up wherever the perimeter has to be controlled without a permanent guard on post. Manufacturing plants and logistics centers install them at the employee entrance, so only staff with valid credentials can enter the production floor. Construction sites use them at the site gate to control who comes and goes during the workday. Public transit hubs and metro stations use them at staff-only entrances to keep non-passengers off the tracks. Prisons and correctional facilities use them to separate the public visiting area from restricted zones. Student dormitories and apartment compounds use them after dark to keep visitors out. Sports venues and stadiums use them at back-of-house entrances. Warehouses and distribution centers use them to separate the public loading area from the internal stock zone.

What all these sites have in common is a perimeter that has to be protected around the clock, often in weather, often without a dedicated security officer at the gate itself. The full height turnstile takes over that function.

Integration and Customization

The gate connects to whatever identification system the site already runs. The unified external interface accepts ID cards, IC cards, EM cards, fingerprint readers, face recognition terminals, QR code readers, and ESD systems, and it communicates over RS485 or TCP/IP with a central management platform. Direction can be single or bidirectional, and the unit can be integrated with existing access control software rather than forcing a rip-and-replace of the whole system.

Customization is standard. The channel width, cabinet finish, drive type, and access control integration can all be adjusted for a specific project. ZOJE accepts OEM and ODM orders, and we can configure the gate to match the look of a particular facility or to meet a local building code.

The Specification in Brief

The ZOJE-Z2004 full height turnstile measures roughly 1500 by 1240 by 2250 millimeters as a dual-channel unit, with a standard channel width of 600 millimeters. Unlock takes 0.2 seconds, and the unit handles 35 people per minute per lane. It runs on standard AC power and operates from a wide temperature range, so it works both in a heated lobby and at an outdoor entrance exposed to cold winters. In an emergency, the doors open automatically for free egress, which is a standard safety requirement. The gate carries traffic indicators and automatic reset, so a person who enters and does not pass through leaves the lane ready for the next user.

In the dual-channel unit ZOJE recently assembled for a customer, two lanes share a single stainless steel cabinet, with green indicators on top showing which side is open. The unit was built in our workshop and tested through hundreds of open-close cycles before it was crated for shipment — the kind of pre-shipment run every full height turnstile goes through before it leaves the factory.

If you are planning a perimeter entrance for a factory, a transit facility, a compound, or any site where unauthorized entry is a serious risk, the full height turnstile is worth a close look. It combines a physical barrier that cannot be climbed through with an access control interface that fits whatever system you already run, and it does both without requiring a guard on post. ZOJE's sales team can help you work out whether a single or dual-channel unit fits your layout, which drive type suits your traffic level, and how to integrate the gate with your existing credentials. We can also arrange a sample or a site visit to a working installation before you commit to a larger order.
